Cet article témoigne de l’histoire d’Yvonne Sylvain ayant grandi au sein d’une famille à haut statut social, et s’étant grandement investie dans le mouvement féministe haïtien. Yvonne fait des études en médecine, en obstétrique et en gynécologie. Elle va aussi à l’étranger pour apprendre les pratiques médicales qu’elle tente d’instaurer dans le système de santé haïtien, comme c’est le cas pour l’anesthésie péridurale. Elle effectue plusieurs recherches sur la santé des femmes et le cancer.

Sociopolitical, Gender, and Cultural Factors in the Conceptualization and Treatment of Depression among Haitian Women

This chapter describes various social factors in the lives of Haitian women that intersect with the experience of depression. It presents an overview of socio-political influences on the health and well-being of Haitian women, as well as an examination of various health-related beliefs and practices that shape the ways in which their physical and emotional problems are understood. The chapter traces the history of Haitian culture with a particular emphasis on the roles of women in social and political movements.
Social Capital and Hypertension in Rural Haitian Women

Hypertension is a major global public health risk and significant precursor to cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and maternal mortality. A possible strategy to reduce chronic disease in resource-poor areas is social intervention. Research into the possible relationship of social determinants and disease is needed to determine appropriate social interventions. This study aims to determine the association between social capital and hypertension in rural Haitian women.
Unmet Health Needs Identified by Haitian Women as Priorities for Attention: A Qualitative Study

This 2009 qualitative study investigated Haitian women's most pressing health needs, barriers to meeting those needs and proposed solutions, and how they thought the community and outside organizations should be involved in addressing their needs. The impetus for the study was to get community input into the development of a Family Health Centre in Leogane, Haiti. Individual interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with 52 adult women in six communities surrounding Leogane.
Tragedy in Haiti: Suicidality, PTSD, and Depression Associated with Intimate Partner Violence Among Haitian Women After the 2010 Earthquake

Across the world, suicidal behaviors are responsible for more than one million deaths each year. In Haiti, suicidal behaviors were found to be related to intimate partner violence (IPV) against women. This study was conducted after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and women were asked about IPV before and after that event. A sample of women between 18 and 44 years of age responded to a questionnaire about physical, psychological, or sexual abuse by an intimate or non-intimate partner.
Abuse and Mental Health Concerns Among HIV-Infected Haitian Women Living in the United States

This study describes the prevalence of abuse and mental health issues among a cohort of HIV-infected Haitian women living in the United States. We present data on 96 women, ages 19–73 years (M = 47.6, SD = 11.1), who were screened for mental health concerns between 2009 and 2012. Results demonstrated that 12.5% of the women reported a history of abuse. However, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) secondary to HIV was reported by approximately 34% of women. Depression and anxiety were also highly reported, with rates of 49% and 43%, respectively.
Lifetime and Child Sexual Violence, Risk Factors and Mental Health Correlates Among a Nationally Representative Sample of Adolescents and Young Adults in Haiti: A Public Health Emergency

Very little is known in Haiti and the Caribbean regarding child and lifetime sexual victimization. Using a nationally representative sample of adolescents and young adults aged 15–24, this study aimed to document the prevalence, risk factors and mental health correlates of lifetime and child sexual violence in Haiti. A national cross-sectional surrvey was conducted in Haiti, using a multistage sampling frame, stratified by geographical department, urban or rural setting, gender, and age groups (15–19 and 20–24 years). The final sample included 3586 household participants (47.6% female).
Prevalence and Factors Related to Dating Violence Victimization and Perpetration Among a Representative Sample of Adolescents and Young Adults in Haiti

BACKGROUND: Studies examining both victimization and perpetration of dating violence among both women and men are virtually non-existent in Haiti. This study aimed to document the prevalence and factors associated with victimization and perpetration of dating violence (DV) among adolescents and young adults aged 15-24 years in Haiti.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A total of 3586 participants (47.6% women; mean age = 19.37; SD = 2.71) were sampled in the 10 geographical departments according to residence areas (urban/rural), age group (15-19/20-24 years old), and gender (men/women).
Fréquence des accouchements gémellaires à Haïti : Tendances et facteurs de variation

Il y a peu d’études sur les fréquences d’accouchements gémellaires (taux de gémellité) à Haïti. Pourtant, les statistiques sur ces naissances sont très utiles en termes de santé publique, puisque les enfants jumeaux sont connus pour être sujets à des risques de mortalité plus importants que les non-jumeaux. C’est pourquoi ce présent article analyse les fréquences d’accouchements gémellaires, ses évolutions ainsi que ses facteurs de variation à Haïti de 1985 à 2015. Pour ce faire, nous avons mobilisé les données des cinq enquêtes démographiques et de santé que le pays a réalisées.
Listening to Haitian Women and Their Health Care Providers: Insight into Shared Decision-Making After Cesarean Section

Haitian women in Massachusetts have high rates of cesarean section and low rates of vaginal birth after cesarean, despite evidence suggesting that many are eligible to attempt vaginal birth after a previous cesarean. This qualitative study explored the cultural impact of previous surgical birth for Haitian women to inform the development of a patient-centered decision support program. Methods. Key stakeholders included Haitian women with previous cesarean and their obstetric care providers.
