This text narrates the story of Abner Louima, a Haitian man living in New York City in 1997. The author discusses the ways in which the Haitian community witnessed Louima’s story through the lens of systemic harassment, surveillance and police brutality in communities of colour and Haitians and aims to recognize the perspectives of these communities. It investigates the material conditions and cultural logistics that motivated the brutality against Louima.
