Today, after twenty years of active and visible work on the national scene, Haitian feminism is at a crossroads. My paper seeks to address the nature of this crossroads, which I believe is at an impasse between legal reform and cultural shifts that have lagged behind the movement that occasioned structural change at the State level. Complicating this impasse further has been the effects of foreign policy between the US and Haiti that has unduly impacted the agricultural sector, especially rice production, an exclusively female domain historically.

This study discusses the choices available to women in their sexual relationships within the context of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Using groups of women and men, guided by trained moderators, it explores the participants’ knowledge on HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention, the consequences of AIDS, communications with sexual partners and counseling adolescents on HIV/AIDS prevention, among other topics. A key finding suggests that although the female participants are knowledgeable on HIV transmission, they are still fearful of acquiring the disease.

À Port-au-Prince, les victimes d’agressions sexuelles sont confrontées à un accès très limité à la justice. Selon un rapport des Nations Unies, dans le contexte de la mission pour la stabilisation d’Haïti, sur 62 plaintes aucun des cas n’a été traité en l’espace de 18 mois. Le processus est très lent et le danger perdure pour les victimes puisque l’État n’est pas en moyen de leur offrir une protection. La police et le système judiciaire doivent changer la manière dont fonctionne le traitement des demandes.

This report describes in great detail the state of women’s living conditions in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake concerning: access to aid and immediate needs such as potable water, shelter, medical attention and physical safety. By surveying and interviewing surviving women, it also examines long-term issues such as schooling for children and job opportunities for women. It identifies mid- to long-term priorities for reconstruction and recovery.
