Entre juin et août 2020, l'Institut Interuniversitaire de Recherche et de Développement (INURED) a mené une étude exploratoire à méthodologie mixte concernant l'impact de la pandémie de COVID-19 sur les familles en Haïti. Ce rapport examine les impacts économiques, les perturbations en matière de travail et d'éducation, et les divers effets de la pandémie sur les ménages urbains et ruraux d'Haïti, selon les catégories sociales et le sexe.

In 2013 the Limonade Women’s Association for the Development of Agricultural and Craft Production (AFLIDEPA) in Haiti unveiled its transformation center and seed bank. Invoking the Black radical konbit tradition, the organization declared its commitment to food sovereignty and called on its fanm djanm (valiant women) to contribute to the development of their home(land).

Gender is deemed a social construct and is commonly overlooked in economic conversations (Padgett and Warnecke 2011). However, there are critical intersections between gender and economic maturation. Additionally, gender relations in Haiti demote women to the positionality of the “most marginalized” in the country with the fewest liberties yet the greatest socio-economic responsibilities. Thus, rural women are disproportionately affected by most disparities, inclusive of the economic implications in Haiti.

The paper discusses the current patterns of sexual unions in rural Haiti. After reviewing the historical and contemporary factors influencing the relatively low proportions of rural women legally married, an approach to categorizing Haitian unions using culturally meaningful categories is presented. Drawing on data from the 1977 Haitian Fertility Survey Pretest, collected on 747 rural women, the paper analyzes current union status and age at first union, and associated socioeconomic background factors.

The purpose of this study was to further knowledge of health care seeking behavior among pregnant women in rural Haiti. Eighty-two pregnant women were interviewed to assess care seeking behaviors during pregnancy, satisfaction with services, reliance on social networks, and management of pregnancy-related illness. Twenty-five percent reported not seeking care in the formal health sector for a pregnancy-related illness; 32% delayed seeking care.

This text explores the dynamics and complexities within familial groups in rural areas of Northern Haiti. Simpson states that the bonds within these families are not only relational but also based on participation in agricultural labour as well as religious practices. It discusses salient features of sexual and familial institutions in Northern Haiti. In addition to families established through legally recognized civil or ecclesiastic ceremonies, Simpson refers to a socially approved sexual and economic relationship between a man and a woman he calls placée.

Objective: To examine the association between violence experienced by pregnant Haitian women in the previous 6 months and pregnancy-related symptom distress. Methods: A total of 200 women seeking prenatal care at community health dispensaries in the Artibonite Valley were interviewed. Results: Over 4 in 10 women (44.0%) reported that they had experienced violence in the 6 months prior to interview; 77.8% of these women reported that the violence was perpetrated by an intimate partner.

This document is based on a study executed in Haiti in January 1989 by the Consultant, Donna Plotkin. It responds to subregional concerns about the lack of data relating to women’s economic contribution to development. This study is part of the project “The Establishment of a Data Base on Women’s Participation in Social and Economic Change, Phase II” funded by the Government of the Netherlands.

This technical note encompasses Haiti's gender assessment, evaluates the success of gender specific actions implemented between 2011-2017, and presents a Gender and Transport Action Plan (GAP). The GAPs main aim is to guide investments in Haiti's transport sector in conceptualizing and designing gender-sensitive transport projects. By proposing specific gender actions and outcomes, the GAP establishes a clear path to integrate a gender dimension into operations design, implementation and, monitoring and evaluation.

The Integrating Gender and Nutrition within Agricultural Extension Services (INGENAES) project is funded through the Bureau for Food Security (BFS) of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to support the Presidential Feed the Future Initiative, which strives to increase agricultural productivity and the incomes of both men and women in rural areas who rely on agriculture for their livelihoods.
