On January 12, 2010, an earthquake in Haiti sent shockwaves across the world, triggering an unprecedented international response. In the months that followed, international news, legal, development, human rights, and solidarity agencies highlighted the issue of gender-based violence, which has by all accounts increased since the earthquake. Despite activists' nuanced understanding and efforts, official responses have been inadequate while reproducing troubling, albeit familiar, discourses that tend to trigger either denial or demonization.

This document is a response to a questionnaire from a Doctors Without Borders representative from the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti on the question of the legal framework of sexual violence in Haiti. This document thoroughly analyzes the laws surrounding sexual violence and rape as well as the legal proceedings expected in certain situations and cases.

This article discusses the growth and evolution of the women’s movements in Haiti, highlighting its approach to the issue of gender-based violence prior to the end of the Duvalier dictatorship. It explains how this movement located violence in relation to international human rights concerns, to politics in Haiti and to the Haitian human rights movement. It describes how it succeeded in raising public awareness about violence and discrimination against women and its contributions to specific changes in politics and collective attitudes.

Ce mémoire a étudié les perceptions de femmes haïtiennes vivant au Québec depuis moins de cinq ans de leurs relations sexuelles avec les hommes et de leurs rapports de couple. Après avoir opté pour une méthodologie de recherche qualitative, la théorie féministe intersectionnelle a été retenue comme cadre d’analyse. Des entretiens individuels semi-dirigés ont été menés auprès de 9 femmes haïtiennes, âgées de 18 à 60 ans et ayant immigré au Québec depuis moins de cinq ans.

Most countries in the Western Hemisphere have reduced their incidence rates of HIV/ AIDS, but Haiti continues to experience alarming increases in diagnosed cases. This paper examines how political turmoil, poverty, violence and gender inequality contribute to the threat of HIV/AIDS throughout this region, and in particular, how gendered societal constraints make women especially vulnerable by compelling them to prioritize economically- beneficial sexual unions over personal health.

En Haïti, le harcèlement sexuel est un fait de société jusqu’à présent ignoré par la loi. La loi condamne l’agression sexuelle qui diffère cependant du harcèlement. Ce vide juridique laisse les victimes sans recours tandis que leurs agresseurs sont libres de circuler.
