Recent studies report that Haitian women are concerned about unmet women’s health issues. The Days for Girls (DfG) International program features women’s health education and personal hygiene kits to ensure women understand the process of menstruation and sanitary hygiene practices. The aim was to train Haitian seamstresses to produce the DfG kits during an in-country workshop and investigate the perceived benefit of the DfG program in young women who used the DfG kits.

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of violence against women (VAW) held by Haitian men to gain a better understanding of why VAW occurs. Women in Haiti have experienced significant violence, both before and following the 2010 earthquake. Fifteen men aged 26 to 47 participated in a focus group. The data revealed three themes: men's beliefs about VAW and its context, factors influencing VAW, and recommended interventions. When approaching VAW, men must be part of the collective effort.

Elle a été mise en œuvre par l’Institut Haïtien de l’Enfance (IHE) avec l’assistance technique d’ICF International, organisme chargé du programme international des Enquêtes Démographiques et de Santé (DHS) pour le compte de l’USAID.

Être capable de transférer ses gènes ou pouvoir fonder une famille peut être difficile pour quelqu’un qui est considéré comme infertile. Si l’infertilité est une maladie biologique, elle est aussi connue comme un problème social de par le nombre de personnes (15% de la population) qu’elle touche et ses effets dans la vie des personnes désireuses d’un enfant. Toutefois, elle affecte les femmes d’une manière particulière, du fait de la stigmatisation qui est rattachée à l’infertilité féminine.

Research shows that in the Caribbean one-third of people living with HIV continue to engage in unprotected sexual practices. Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and HIV-related risk behaviors have been found to play a contributory role in HIV transmission. We aimed to analyze gender differences in the association between CSA and substance use and sexual risk behaviors among Haitians living with HIV. A total of 276 HIV-positive individuals participated in this study with 56% experiencing sexual abuse during childhood.

This document describes a set of recommendations directed at the Coordinators of the Cluster System in Haiti. The group is comprised of staff from MINUSTAH-Human Rights, MINUSTAH-Gender Unit, UNIFEM, UNFPA, WFP, IOM, UNICEF and several other NGO’s. Recommendations include the integration of a gender analysis in the post disaster needs assessment; developing gender focal points in local offices and around Haiti to ensure that gender is improving the access and safety of women concerning water, sanitation and hygiene, and addressing gender issues regarding shelter and camp management.

Haiti is a Caribbean island with a humanitarian medical center providing healthcare services to 90,000 residents. Pregnant women visiting the medical clinic for prenatal care often do not return for delivery; instead, they return home to deliver alone or with the assistance of a traditional matron. Home-birth practices increase maternal-child health morbidity and mortality in an already fragile country. The purpose of this project was to gain a deeper understanding of Haitian pregnant women’s preferences to deliver at home or at the healthcare clinic.

My dissertation titled "Mambos, Priestesses, and Goddesses: Spiritual Healing Through Vodou in Black Women's Narratives of Haiti and New Orleans" reclaims the practice of Vodou as an integral African spiritual tradition through fiction by black women writers. I discuss how the examination of Vodou necessitates the revision of colonial history, serves as an impetus for reevaluating the literary representation of the black female migrant subject, and gives voice to communities silenced by systemic oppression.

The purpose of this study was to further knowledge of health care seeking behavior among pregnant women in rural Haiti. Eighty-two pregnant women were interviewed to assess care seeking behaviors during pregnancy, satisfaction with services, reliance on social networks, and management of pregnancy-related illness. Twenty-five percent reported not seeking care in the formal health sector for a pregnancy-related illness; 32% delayed seeking care.
