The Toxic Masculinity of the “Legal Bandit”

This report explores the figure of the “Legal Bandit” in Haiti, which is an institutionalized persona born of, and publicly expressing, toxic masculinity and misogyny. The author demonstrates how speech acts carry political significance and how insults can constitute a symbolic act of violence aimed at domination of vulnerable groups. Examples concerning Haiti’s past president Michel Martelly and the impact of his actions on the social representations and practices especially men in the country.

This article discusses the torturous conditions and suffering of enslaved men and women during the years of the French colony of Haiti before the French revolution of 1791. Boisvert focuses on the living conditions of female slaves and their different forms of resistance against their colonizers. In this PhD. thesis, De Hoog extensively documents the Restavèk system in Haiti. She analyses the complex web of local gender dynamics within the global system of patriarchy, which, in the context of a violent post-colonial society, has had a significant impact on children’s safety. This thesis highlights the crucial part of women in this practice and the significance in the fact that the slaveholders of restavèk children are, for the large part, women.
"Girl by the Shore:" Gender and Testimony in Edwidge Danticat's "The Farming of Bones"

In this essay, Larrier analyses literary several texts, the main one being Edwidge Danticat’s The Farming of Bones, so as to explore themes of testimony among women in literature. The author analyses how in Caribbean cultures, women are positioned to see and hear, but they are not always publicly acknowledged as oral historians and storytellers. Many of the female characters mentioned experience trauma and are positioned as witnesses who must transmit information to others but their testimony is almost never given in a courtroom, which reflects the distrust in the current systems.

L’Organisation des Nations Unies est présente, le 25 novembre 2018 en Haïti, avec le ministère à la Condition féminine et aux Droits des femmes (MCFDF) pour souligner la Journée internationale pour l’élimination de la violence à l’égard des femmes et des filles qui touche une femme sur quatre au pays. Le secrétaire général Antonio Guterres affirme que cette violence vient de l’incompétence des hommes à reconnaître les droits des femmes comme étant égaux, ce qui a un énorme impact sur le développement des familles et de la société en général.
